Pre-concert talk before The Necks at 30CC, Leuven, Belgium

Jazz? Avant-garde? Ambient? The legendary Australian cult trio The Necks has been improvising for 40 years with a unique, distinctive sound. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums) and Lloyd Swanton (bass) have perfected their unconventional sound over the course of eighteen albums: long pieces that unfold in an enchanting manner, carried along by a sustained, deep groove.

British writer Geoff Dyer, a devoted fan of The Necks, will be in conversation with fellow author Colin Walsh ahead of the performance.

With But Beautiful (1991), Dyer wrote what has been called “perhaps the finest book ever written about jazz.” Lester Young, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Ben Webster, Chet Baker, Art Pepper, Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington and Harry Carney: in But Beautiful, a book about jazz and the musicians who shaped it, Geoff Dyer tells the story of nine men who helped define the genre. He captures their lives and music in a style that reflects the brilliance and individuality of each musician’s journey. This summer, the long-awaited Dutch translation was finally published by Tristan Publishers.

In this pre-concert talk, Dyer will discuss his book and, above all, his fascination with and connection to The Necks. In 2017, he wrote about his obsession with the band in The New York Times Magazine, in an essay titled My Obsession with The Necks, the Greatest Trio on Earth.
