Award-winning writer and critic Geoff Dyer — “a national treasure” (Zadie Smith) — will be speaking with Sloane Crosley for the launch of his new memoir, Homework.

Beloved for his brilliantly ranging, hilarious criticism and essays — Steve Martin calls Out of Sheer Rage, an exasperated study of D.H. Lawrence, “the funniest book I have ever read” — Geoff Dyer turns his critical powers inward in Homework, his first memoir. With candor, heart, and wit, Homework tells the story of Dyer’s boyhood education as the only child of a sheet-metal worker and a school lunch lady in postwar England — from the tribulations of teenage romance, prog rock and sports to the encounters with books and literature that transform his life.

Recounting an eroded but resilient England, Homework is more than a portrait of the essayist as a young man — it also traces, in hilarious detail, the strains and rumblings of a painfully striated class society that reverberate to this day. In a special reading in celebration of Homework’s launch, hear Dyer tell the story of his life as only he can.
