Dyer\, who is teaching this semester in the Nonfiction Writing Program in the English Department at the University of Iowa is the winner of the 2012 National Book Critics Circle Award for his collection of essays\, Otherwise Known as the Human Condition\, as well as the winner of the Somerset Maugham Prize. He has written authoritatively and with great originality and insight about such disparate subjects as photography (The Ongoing Moment)\, jazz (But Beautiful)\, memory and forgetting (The Missing of the Somme)\, literary obsession (Out of Sheer Rage) and most recently\, film (Zona).
