SUMMARY:Hong Kong International Literary Festival: Geoff Dyer - Where? What? Where?
DESCRIPTION:In his essay collection White Sands\, Geoff Dyer spins dazzling travelogues out of the least likely places on earth. From desolate desert landscapes to the “hellhole” of Norway’s Arctic reaches\, “the less promising his subject\, the more brilliant Dyer gets” (Guardian). \nIn this talk moderated by Jeffrey Mather\, Dyer will speak about travel writing\, his famous disregard for the line between fiction and non-fiction and the alchemy by which he turns dull and disappointing subjects into literary treasure.

SUMMARY:A Tribute to Where Eagles Dare: Broadsword Calling Danny Boy with Geoff Dyer
DESCRIPTION:Join Geoff Dyer for a hilarious scene-by-scene commentary of cult classic Second World War film Where Eagles Dare. With its historical inaccuracies\, camp SS officers and inexplicable plot twists\, starring a magnificent\, bleary-eyed Richard Burton and a coolly anachronistic Clint Eastwood\, Where Eagles Dare is the apex of 1960s war movies\, by turns enjoyable and preposterous. ‘Broadsword Calling Danny Boy’ is Geoff Dyer’s tribute to the film he has loved since childhood: a scene-by-scene analysis taking us from its snowy\, Teutonic opening credits to its vertigo-inducing climax. \n‘Geoff Dyer’s funniest book yet. Who else would work in Martha Gellhorn on the first page of a book on the film Where Eagles Dare?’ Michael Ondaatje

SUMMARY:The Restless Genius of Garry Winogrand: A Conversation with Geoff Dyer and Sasha Waters Freyer at the Annenberg Space for Photography\, Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Two experts on the prolific photographer Garry Winogrand will offer their views and visions of his approach and achievements\, sharing their work and their knowledge in an intriguing conversation. Winogrand\, known for his portrayal of U.S. life and its social issues\, through spontaneous images of people – particularly in New York during the 1960s and in Los Angeles where he died in 1984 – had an uncanny sense of timing. He was able to capture bizarre and sometimes implausible configurations of people\, places\, and things\, making him one of the most influential artists of his generation.

SUMMARY:Geoff Dyer and Sasha Waters Freyer discuss the work of Garry Winogrand at the Austin Public Library\, Austin\, Texas
DESCRIPTION:Garry Winogrand was one of the most important photographers of the 1960’s and 1970’s\, as well as one of the world’s foremost street photographers whose images capture a bygone era: the New York of Mad Men and the early years of the Women’s Movement\, the birth of American suburbs\, and the glamour and alienation of Hollywood. His “snapshot aesthetic\,” once derided by critics\, is now the universal language of contemporary image making. \nJoin us for a presentation and discussion of Winogrand’s life and work that will include author Geoff Dyer discussing a selection of Winogrand photographs based on passages from his recently published book The Street Philosophy of Garry Winogrand\, and Sasha Waters Freyer presenting excerpts from her award-winning documentary Garry Winogrand: All Things Are Photographable.
